A Closer Look on Indonesian EFL students’ Writing Process: The Application of Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies

Cognitive and metacognitive strategies have been researched to find an effective strategy in teaching writing. However, little attention has given investigate what is on the students’ minds while applying those writing process. This descriptive qualitative study aims process of cognitive by EFL students performing argumentative essays. Three university English Department taking Essay Writing subject were invited record authoring essays using Zoom recording display full audio video screen. Their writings checked interviewed. used think-aloud protocols (TAPs) completed with screen method (SRM) all activities computer screen, work, interview explored learners’ perception towards particular situation their The data categorized analyzed as a foreign language (EFL) framework for narrative analysis. found that both helped participants complete essay through thinking decision making each step strategy. While applied distinctively participant’s processes, it produced internalization steps critically self-regulated learning. demonstrates processes are promoting varied learning learners. To get thorough application activity, future research can use other genre at different age or level education.
